Friends of Sherman Creek is an all volunteer, community-based organization dedicated to the conservation of the Sherman Creek salt marsh wetlands on the Harlem River, to advocate for public access to the waterfront, and to provide Environmental Education After School Programs to the youth of the communities of Washington Heights and Inwood in New York City.
Friends of Sherman Creek was founded in 2005 by Mr.Obed Fulcar, educator, conservationist, and parks advocate, as part of Partnerships for Parks Academy. It all started as a way to provide special education middle school students with opportunities to do community service by cleaning up debris from Highbridge Park, as well as the Sherman Creek mudflats. As a result of learning about the importance of the estuarine waters of the Harlem River and the uniqueness of the salt marsh wetlands and mudflats of Sherman Creek, Mr.Fulcar decided to form a grassroot group to help involve teenage students, parents and teachers into advocate for public access to the waterfront as well as for environmental education afterschool programs. The right to public access to the waterfront has been historically denied to the communities of Northern Manhattan.
Today we have a great opportunity to make this a reality with the reopening of Academy Street as a pedestrian walkway also known as the Sherman Creek Esplanade, and with the creation of a new Community Boathouse/Public Pier located at Sherman Creek just behind PS5. This new public waterfront will feature not only space to store kayaks and small watercrafts, but also comfort stations, an existing boat launch ramp, and an Eco-dock. We have a wonderful opportunity once the site is cleaned up to make this happen. Friends of Sherman Creek is committed to work with all stakeholders in making this happen. We are reaching out to the Harlem River Working Group, Community Board 12, Conservancy North, Highbridge Coalition, NYC Dept of Parks and Recreation, NYCDOT, Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, elected officials, city and state agencies, as well as non profits and community-based organizations to help us in this worthy cause. We believe this project is aligned with the goals set out on the Mayor's Waterfront PlanNYC.
